Maduro to Airdrop One Petro Each to Venezuelan Doctors

Like other nations around the world, Venezuela’s medical community has been battling to contain the coronavirus. Now, that country’s government is apparently expressing its thanks for those doctors’ efforts by giving each doctor one petro cryptocurrency coin via a national airdrop.

The special bonus was initially announced at an event for the nation’s doctors on March 10. On the country’s Patria blog, officials had noted that the petros would be gradually delivered, direct to each doctor. The government of President Nicolas Maduro announced the beginning of the airdrop on its Homeland Card twitter account on April 1:

Thanks to the President @NicolasMaduro begins the delivery of the Special Bonus for Doctors and Doctors of the Fatherland, in the amount of # 1Petro through the @CarnetDLaPatria.

Local Venezuelan media has reported that the bonus is being provided to recognize the doctors’ contribution to protecting the Venezuelan people’s health from the effects of the current virus pandemic.

The petro is currently valued at a little less than $59, according to the government’s official rate of exchange - or nearly 5 million bolivars.
