Twitter and Square CEO Jack Dorsey told attendees at the Consensus blockchain conference on Wednesday that the internet will eventually have its own currency, and that he hopes it will be Bitcoin. He also said that he expects Square to fill a leadership role in achieving global acceptance of digital currency as a payment option.
While on stage at the conference, Dorsey urged those in attendance to take a proactive role in pushing cryptocurrency into the mainstream:
"The internet is going to have a native currency so let's not wait for it to happen, let's help it happen. I don't know if it will be Bitcoin, but I hope it will be."
Dorsey acknowledged that global use of digital currency would make it easier for his company to expand into new markets, according to CNBC, and suggested, "If we were able to use it a currency today, we could release our apps in every app store around the world instead of the five we're in.” He also described the challenges Square now encounters as it tries to enter different markets that each use their own fiat currency.
Dorsey has been a vocal advocate for Bitcoin, and has said that he expects the world to adopt it as a currency sometime within the next ten years.
