Water is essential to life, and yet in many of the remote communities throughout sub-Saharan Africa a reliable, safe, water supply is something they simply do not have. The Water Project, Inc. is a non-profit that works tirelessly to ensure communities throughout the region have the kind of water supplies that they should, safe, reliable and self-sustaining.
Their new project, named “The Water Promise”, uses a combination of high-tech monitoring equipment and local repair teams to keep water supplies safe and sustainable in the long term. The organization has raised the funds to help such communities through partnerships with local communities and organizations, supplying new water supplies to many throughout the region, but this time they are turning to Bitcoin as the major payment supplier.
The reason for this is that it is much cheaper for them to receive donations and transfer the funds around the world to where they are needed. Previously tied to the fiat banking system and providers such as Pay Pal, the organization is now looking for donations of between 0.196 to 98.5748 Bitcoins to provide the monitored water supplies to individuals, schools and whole villages throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
When the aim is to save lives, every cent counts, and like The Water Project, Inc., many non-profit organizations are realizing the benefits of digital currency payments. Indeed, while “The Water Promise” is notable for the shift from the traditional banking industry and the great work it is doing, it is not alone in making this shift. The “Bitnation Refugee Emergency Response” is another such endeavor, formed from several non-profit organizations and designed to collect funds for humanitarian aid for the Syrian refugees currently trying to find somewhere safe across the Middle East and Europe.
The basic design of Bitcoin, with its secure transactions at extremely low cost is perfect for situations such as this. Fast, efficient transfer of funds to where it is needed without precious donations being eaten up by the costs involved from the traditional banking system. The difference in cost is made even more obvious when transferring funds across borders comes in, as with most of these kinds of projects. Here the ability to quickly move funds without extra charges or bureaucracy becomes a genuine life saver, providing more funds, faster, to the people who need them.
Bitcoin is maturing as a platform and an industry, the ability to aid such worthy causes and highlight the benefits of digital currency will not only help make a real difference to people’s lives, but enhance the reputation of the digital currency technology across the world.
