The City of London Police has created a new cryptocurrency training program for its officers, according to a report at City A.M. The Economic Crime Academy will provide the course to help officers better manage investigations involving cryptocurrencies by providing them with the basic education and skills needed to better understand the technology.
A spokesperson for the City of London Police confirmed the existence of the pilot program and suggested that a second pilot is scheduled to begin next month. She praised the idea and noted that the program was a response to officers’ concerns about the unfamiliar technology. The course is designed to remedy that lack of preparation:
“It is designed to provide delegates with the skills and knowledge required to recognise and manage cryptocurrencies in an investigation.
On successful completion of this course, participants will understand how to detect, seize and investigate the use of cryptocurrencies in an investigative context.
It will be the first of its kind and has been developed in response to feedback from police officers nationally who felt there wasn’t enough training in the area.”
There are reportedly plans to replicate the training on a nationwide basis after the completion of the second pilot program.
