Fortnite Game Merchandise Store Now Accepts Monero

The merchandise store for popular computer game Fortnite, Retail Row, has begun accepting Monero exclusively as a cryptocurrency payment option, according to a twitter post by Monero.

Fortnite is a hugely successful free-to-play computer game from Epic Games that boasts more than 200 million total players. The battle royale game drops players on an island where they must procure weapons and resources. The last remaining team or player is declared the winner.

The games success saw Epic Games secure an additional $1.25 billion to expand its effort in esports and live events, taking the company’s valuation to $15 billion.

Now players can purchase Fortnite merchandise with Monero by routing the payment through cryptocurrency-friendly payment processor Globee, which is supported by Fortnite’s Retail Row store.

The move is being seen by some as a big step towards cryptocurrency adoption, with many holding the belief that digital entertainment could be a catalyst for cryptocurrency growth. In November, DCEBrief reported on a Piper Jaffray survey that showed teenagers would prefer to receive gifts of cryptocurrency and Fortnite’s in-game currency “V-Bucks” over cash, gift cards and gas money.
