United Nations secretary-general António Guterres is calling for the UN to fully embrace blockchain technology, Forbes reports. The secretary-general reportedly praised the technology as a vital component in the UN’s efforts to achieve its long-term goals.
In a statement to Forbes, Guterres said:
“For the United Nations to deliver better on our mandate in the digital age, we need to embrace technologies like blockchain that can help accelerate the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.”
Guterres has previously cited blockchain’s potential benefits in areas like trust, transparency, and accountability. In recent years, the United Nations Innovation Network has moved aggressively to leverage blockchain technology in various global projects involving supply chain management, remittances, and donation.
The UN hopes to use blockchain in efforts like waste reduction, and donor management as well. As Forbes notes, however, those efforts could take years to come to fruition.
